OUR RABBITS

We used to have several breeds of rabbits. But now we have settled with "Giant Belgium". We have 2 does and one buck.

The does names are "Silver queen" and "The hare" due to their color. The Buck is called "The King" because he is royal.

Flemish Giant History

The Flemish Giant is the largest breed of rabbit. They originate from the Flanders region in Belgium and were originally bred for meat. The Flemish Giant was first bred in the 16th century making it an old breed. It is believed that the Flemish Giant is the result of breeding the Steenkonijn (‘stone rabbit’) with the european Patagonian rabbit. According to Thomas Coatoam, the first authentic record of the Flemish Giant was in 1860.

It is thought that the breed was imported to England mid 19th century, before being exported to America in the 1890s to improve the size of meat rabbits. The first breed standards were written in 1893, but it wasn’t until 1910 that the breed became more popular emerging in livestock shows across America. The breed is a very universal breed being popular not only as a pet but for showing, its meat, and for its fur.

The flemish giant weighs between 14 and 20 lbs.

The chicken and the rabbits are protected by a electric fence. This is because we have some hungry cats that sometime stop by at night. But don’t worry – the electric fence is OFF from 08:00 – 20:00. The electric fence around the goats run 24/7. Getting a shock from the fence can be painful, but it is safe and there are no hazard either for you or your children.

FEEDING THE ANIMALS AT OUR FARM

Guests are welcome to feed our animals, but let's keep a few guidelines in mind:

During summer, the fish in the pond enjoy white bread in moderation.

Our rabbits adore dandelions in large quantities, please ensure to avoid other plants as they can be toxic for the rabbits.

The goats favor dark rye bread in moderation and branches from the paddock trees.

Our chickens happily devour leftovers, but remember to feed them in moderation.
